One thing will never change: younger children will spend hours pretending that they are grown up. The stereotype says that it is little girls who like to pretend that they are mommies, but little boys like to pretend that they are daddies too! One of the major parts of this play is the "adoption" of a stuffed animal or doll who becomes their "baby" and is someone that they are in charge of. The kids will send their babies to school feed them invisible meals and make sure that their babies get enough sleep at night in their doll beds.
Some parents go all out-they buy expensive child sized furniture for their son or daughter to use while he or she is playing grown up. Others help their children create make shift furniture in the hopes that "playing grown up" is a quick phase. One thing that many children covet during this stage is a real doll bed for their baby to sleep in. Why not give them a doll bed that will stand up against the wear and tear that comes from being a part of a child's play time?
Children especially like doll beds that look like the beds they are sleeping in themselves. This makes the game even more fun as they can tell their "child" that "when I was your age, I slept in a bed just like the one you are sleeping in now!" Other children will appreciate that their baby has a place to sleep that is all his/her own. Whatever their reasoning, doll beds are incredibly popular among young children. Some will try to cram their entire doll and stuffed animal collection into a single doll bed!
It can be tempting to resist the urge to go overboard and buy an expensive doll bed that will, at most, only see a year or so of use before your son or daughter outgrows this new favorite "game" and moves on to something else. Instead of resisting though, why not simply compromise? Have you considered doll beds that are made from materials that will last a long time? These doll beds can be handed down to your grandchildren - once you have grandchildren that are not made of plastic and synthetic materials that is!
Doll beds can be just as precious as any other family heirloom. They can be a great way for a parent to bond with a child: "When I was your age, I had a 'baby' too and she slept in this bed. Would you like your baby to use it too?" Kids, no matter how young, understand when they are given something precious. Handing down doll beds is a great way to instill them with a sense of their family's history and, in turn, give them something to hand down when they are old enough!
This year why not invest in doll beds that will last? You'll love watching your son or daughter and it down to his son or daughter when he/she is all grown up.
